Lemons first arrived on Lake Garda at the end of the 12th century, when St Francis of Assisi founded a monastery in Gargnano. Over the centuries, to encourage the cultivation of these Mediterranean fruits and protect them from the cold, the gardeners of Garda built the Limonaie, extraordinary masonry greenhouses that are unique in the world. These structures, still visible today along the western shore of the lake, represent the northernmost point in the world where citrus fruits are grown.
The “Limonaie Tour” is a guided walk to discover the lemon gardens of Gargnano, a historical, architectural and cultural treasure of great value. During the tour, you can learn about the history of the Limonaie and admire the picturesque terraces that characterise the Garda landscape.
The experience ends with a tasting of local products at the Terre & Sapori agricultural cooperative shop.
The route is not suitable for people with reduced mobility or families with pushchairs, as it includes climbs, steps and cobbled sections. Dogs on a leash are allowed. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and bringing water, a hat and sunscreen. In case of rain, the walk may be cancelled.
